Prepare a cleaner-air space
Health Canada recommends preparing before wildfire smoke arrives. Identify a room where you can keep windows and doors closed and improve indoor air. If you use a portable air cleaner, check that its rating fits the room and keep replacement filters available.
Have respirators ready
If you must spend time outdoors during smoke, a well-fitting NIOSH-certified N95 or equivalent respirator can reduce exposure to fine particles. Fit matters. A respirator is not a reason to remain in heavy smoke unnecessarily.
Make a plan for the people most affected
Consider children, older adults and anyone with a health condition when deciding where to go if indoor air cannot be kept clean. Follow local air-quality alerts and public-health instructions. Smoke conditions can change quickly.
A sensible first check: do you have a clean filter that fits your air cleaner, a room to use it in, and respirators that actually fit the people who may need them?
